Antique Finds

Here are the books I got today for just a couple of dollars:
This one is fabulous because it was a interior design textbook from the University of Arkansas (according to the stamp inside the cover.) The girl who used it made a lot of class notes in the book and wrote the dates of her tests in it too. These tests, by the way, were in 1954.

Rainy Day Blogg'n
I think this is the point when Weatherman Ned Perme would tell you to get in a ditch. Really it was nothing but I thought it was sketchy at the time.
Anyways, rainy days call for comfort food so today I give you a recipe for french onion soup.
4 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon salt
2 large red onions, thinly sliced
2 large sweet onions, thinly sliced
1 (48 fluid ounce) can chicken broth
1 (14 ounce) can beef broth
1/2 cup red wine
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 sprigs fresh parsley
1 sprig fresh thyme leaves
1 bay leaf
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
4 thick slices French or Italian bread
8 slices Gruyere or Swiss cheese slices, room temperature
1/2 cup shredded Asiago or mozzarella cheese, room temperature
4 pinches paprika
Directions
1.Melt butter in a large pot over medium-high heat. Stir in salt, red onions and sweet onions. Cook 35 minutes, stirring frequently, until onions are caramelized and almost syrupy.
2.Mix chicken broth, beef broth, red wine and Worcestershire sauce into pot. Bundle the parsley, thyme, and bay leaf with twine and place in pot. Simmer over medium heat for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove and discard the herbs. Reduce the heat to low, mix in vinegar and season with salt and pepper. Cover and keep over low heat to stay hot while you prepare the bread.
3.Preheat oven broiler. Arrange bread slices on a baking sheet and broil 3 minutes, turning once, until well toasted on both sides. Remove from heat; do not turn off broiler.
4.Arrange 4 large oven safe bowls or crocks on a rimmed baking sheet. Fill each bowl 2/3 full with hot soup. Top each bowl with 1 slice toasted bread, 2 slice Gruyere cheese and 1/4 of the Asiago or mozzarella cheese. Sprinkle a little bit of paprika over the top of each one.
5.Broil 5 minutes, or until bubbly and golden brown. As it softens, the cheese will cascade over the sides of the crock and form a beautifully melted crusty seal. Serve immediately!

Conquering the Beast
I have needed to reorganize for weeks but did not have the 24 hours need to devote to the space. Finally this weekend I went for it and have one particular shelf that I'm proud of as it is dedicated to accessories.

Because I know you are sitting there going, "Did this girl seriously devote a blog post to a shelf in her closet?! How dull can her life be?" I offer you a recipe.

Ingredients
4 tablespoons cocoa
1 stick butter
1/2 cup milk
1 cup peanut butter
1 tablespoon vanilla
3 cups oatmeal
Waxed paper
You will not be disappointed!

What Have I Gotten Myself Into?
Honestly I am very excited and looking forward to helping out but do find this whole thing laughable as I am the only one in the group not receiving a senior discount at Luby's. I think this next edition is slated to come out in the fall so I'm sure it will keep me busy. That is, unless they fire me.

These are a Few of My Favorite Things
I am always looking for a new product to love. Makeup, food, toothpaste, detergent; You name it and I'm probably on the quest to find, in my opinion, the best product. And once I find that perfect product I'm faithful. Because I have established a few faves I would like to share.

No I'm not a bottled water snob who refuses to drink from the tap. I'm so not a snob so much that I've been drinking out of the same water bottle for like two weeks, seriously. Apparently this Smart Water has electrolytes and is made in clouds like rainwater (or something like that). I don't care about all of that. I just like to fill the bottle up whenever I need more water. It holds a liter so I try to drink three a day. While it's not the product that I love and rather the bottle, I wanted to share.

I just bought a Swiffer Wet Jet a month ago and I am just sad that I didn't get one sooner. Way, way, way better than a mop and bucket (apparently I was living in 1954.)

Another favorite is the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. It's perfect for everything but I use it for our white cabinets and baseboards. I discovered them after my sister and mother of two boys called and said, "I just tried a Magic Eraser and would be thrilled if I got nothing but a basket full of these for Christmas!"
I just bought a box of the Magic Erasers for the bathroom over the weekend to use on our shower door. I haven't gotten a chance to use it yet but I know already that I will be a happy consumer.
Beauty
Burt's Bees makes some great products and one that I use religiously is the dusting powder. It has a lot of different uses but I like to put it in my hair to soak up oil. Having blonde, fine hair means I get the greasy look easily so this is my all time favorite beauty tip. I always dust a little in my hair every morning to prevent oil and also to give it volume. This trick works with any type of body powder including baby but Burt's is my favorite.
I'm pretty cheap but will pay good money for two things; haircuts and foundation. I have been on a hunt for the perfect foundation for years and have finally found something that I love! Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation is amazing. It is truly light but does a great job on coverage. It costs about $40 but lasts forever. All I use is a small dab (half the size of a finger nail.) I got it from Glo Limited in Little Rock.
Luckily you do not have to pay a whole lot for this: Maybelline's Dream Mousse Concealer ($10 at Target). It offers great coverage for pimples, dark circles, discoloration and fine lines but is very, very lightweight. Like the foundation, a little goes a long way.

Borderline Obsession
Finally....
This is the main character, Don Draper played by Jon Hamm - easy on the eyes, huh?
While I was on the website I saw something called "Mad Men Yourself". Basically you get to play digital dress up. And did I cheesily partake? As Sarah Palin would say, "You Bethca!"
Oh but I did not stop at one. I had too much fun.
Aaaaaaaand again...
I would like to state that I do not smoke but you cannot 60's yourself without cigarette in hand.
I also did this one for Beau. I doubt he will appreciate it but I thought a fourth one of myself was a little too self-absorbed.
Want to try or just bored to tears? Check it out!

Fourth of July

It was a great weekend and I'm so thankful for what the holiday meant, celebrating our country's independence and honoring those who have served in the military that have kept us free!
